- Chess Evolved Online, also known as Old Old Chess Battle Advanced, is a game created by a crypto-addicted Spaghetti Monster. In my opinion, it's a "must-play" game in that it expands your idea of what chess variants even are, with over 400+ pieces and a non-p2w upgrades system.
SHORT REVIEW:
all tiers: high risk to be killed; good to quickly have targets for a specific square or fork, but much easier to disrupt than classic chess; just like pawn in regular chess, opponent can often use your own pawn against you because your own pawn blocks the way
+0: passable king defense / sit forever near center as potential fork threats
+1: can quickly go to 5th row and constrict, decent promotion threat; still not used THAT often, but is the best of the tiers and is the only one with positive winrate
+2: for rushes only, have rooks behind it, but it can often be ignored
+3: no army really wants it, despite the insta-promote; meme army with angel, but needs buff (goes without saying that bishop+++ is still a lot worse than queen in classic chess)

The biggest weakness is now being forced into becoming a bishop.
When a pawn promotes to bishop and then that bishop dies what happens with its value? You lose 0 bc it was a pawn or 12 bc it is a bishop?
12 (but you don't lose anything net, because you gained 12 from the promote)
@@propaul1369 you gain 10 when it becomes a Bishop (may change depending on + level), and if that dies, then you go back down to 0

Amazing how the developer missed the point so hard, he managed to put power creep into chess.

I know the game is kinda scuffed, but I wouldn't really say there's "power creep"

@@altrivotzck6565 yeah, but it's more than that. The weaknesses of pieces in chess are what makes it work. The pawns are bad because it forces you to work around them and gives pacing to a match. The more powerful pieces get out later partially because they are harder to get past the pawn barrier. Then at the end game you find yourself desperately defending these weak pieces, because if only one of them reaches promotion it can give you the win. When you look at these chess battle advanced matches, they have absolutely no pacing. Everyone is instakilling everyone else. You get out of the barrier with some "unblockable" and target all of your opponent's pieces. You may get the extra bit of building a comp, but the game loses all the strategy. So that's why it's especially galling to add power creep to chess, because making the pieces more powerful already makes the game worse.

It's much easier to enjoy the game if you think of it as a different game in the same genre, rather than "worse chess"
It's more like a TCG, where a lot of the actual "fight" happens before a match even starts, when players are designing their own team, and the actual fight itself is more just trying to use the "deck" to the best of your ability, including some Chess-like tactics.
It's like many Chess variants, like Spell Chess or CrazyHouse, which cause the game to go way quicker, by allowing the players to do "stronger" things to eachother.
Conversely, you have variants like the online Drawback Chess (I can't really think of many others, though I guess playing a less-powerful version like Chaturanga would be similar), where the changes it makes to the game are "negative", usually slowing the game down, rather than speeding it up like most other variants.
Anyways, basically what I'm saying is, is that comparing this game too closely to actual FIDE chess just doesn't really make sense.
If you have a bunch of different pieces that you can choose between, and you can rearrange them, then yeah, you can arrange them into positions where you can easily attack your opponent. That's kinda the premise of the game, almost.
Attacking it on this premise doesn't really feel like fair criticism, and it barely even feels like criticism, at all. There are plenty of other things about it that can be fairly criticized.
Of course the regular pawn was always going to be weaker than other similar pieces. The Pawn is like intentionally designed to be as weak as it can be. It can only move 1 square in 1 direction (save for a special time-saving rule that was added later) and it can only capture on short-range squares different than the one it can move on.
Almost any other piece design is gonna be stronger than that, and people simply aren't gonna use ones that are weaker.
The only other Chess piece I can think of that's about as weak is the Chaturanja Elephant, and it's almost certainly stronger than a pawn.

I still use a pawn+ because just the reach on them is cool, it takes 3 turns for the axeman and milita to reach your half, but only one hop for an upgraded pawn (it will die afterwards but that's a sacrifice i'm willing to make)
promoting to a bishop is their biggest weakness though
Pawn not promoting to Rook makes it terrible.

OK pawn+++ looks like have no good value, cost 3, but looks like was not so terrible, I don't know if this just one point was so critical. At very least can promote in one move!

@@musicexams5258 I had never really heard about the creator's design philosophy, but this explains a lot.
Now I know why this game is so fast-paced & aggressive in comparrison to chess.
I thought that was just a consequence of the designs of the first few pieces, but no, it was probably intentional.

I disagree, I think the game is pretty good. Certainly many flaws, but it's absurd to call it a net negative.
